Being an active person takes practice. Fitness, like being Active, is not something you work towards and then its over. Fitness comes from the practice of a balanced, active lifestyle*. A fit lifestyle is something you "practice" on a daily basis. Practice is not perfection, but Practice is the Thing! Practice is just that, practice, it will never be perfect. The good news is it doesn't need to be.
When you are Fresh Off the Couch, you may have been (up until this point) been practicing a sedentary lifestyle. Little baby steps toward changing stationary into motion, coupled with a calm mental attitude and internal encouragement can make the change to an active lifestyle attainable for anyone. Practicing an active lifestyle is as simple as taking a walk or a bike ride, a swim, bowling or whatever is fun for you.
The recipe for a FITTER YOU, mentally and physically- It's simple:
ADD small amounts of additional fun activity each day
MIX with a liberal amount of talking NICE to yourself.
SHAKE lightly and voila! - A healthier you.

* Do not confuse "Active Lifestyle" with "Thinness" of the practitioner ( this is a common mistake). -MF
