Sedentary jobs are stealing time for activity. Time to steal some back!

A New York Times article by Tara Parker-Pope points to a shift towards dwindling activity in our workplace as a possible culprit in rising health risks.

"A sweeping review of shifts in the labor force since 1960 suggests that a sizable portion of the national weight gain can be explained by declining physical activity during the workday."

Sedentary jobs are stealing time for activity.  Time to steal some back! Here is how:

Start small - even just standing and stretching after an hour sitting at the computer can be a great habit to cultivate. Good for the circulation and it just feels good, but getting your heart beating a little faster can be good for your health. Use a timer to remind you to get up.

Start at work - Volunteer to get the coffee for your office mate.  Get up to pick up the copies at the copy machine.  Even stand and work. Any excuse to move around. Take your 15 minute breaks and take a walk. Your brain will work better and faster and your body will feel better.

Invent new ways to be active at work - Just met someone who arranged his computer desk up to standing level so he never sat. He lost some serious pounds over a year by just not sitting.

My timer just went off - time for a short walk - MF

  1. Set-up an ergonomic workstation. You can also incorporate a few exercise even while in the office.
